Many of the buildings and cabins here (including my house) have metal roofs. As the snow collects and forms a solid layer on top, the heat from the room underneath mealts the bottom layer of the snow and makes it slide off. Sometimes the snow still holds together enough to create an overhanging snow-sheet off the edge of the roof. This cabin has an excellent example of that.
